How the prices were collected
Every figure is a pair price printed by a named seller and read on October 20, 2026: Costco's Hearing Aid Center, Sam's Club, ZipHearing (an online seller that has a local provider fit the aids), and the makers' own stores for over-the-counter models. Nothing is estimated or averaged into a "typical" price; where a page did not say whether a price was for one aid or two, the product was left out. The methodology lists every source and every exclusion.
Across the 49 models the lowest starting price is $98 and the highest printed price is $4,898 a pair. The 18 over-the-counter models and earbuds start at a median of $949.48; the 31 provider-fitted models start at a median of $2,798. Costco's packages all start between $1,599.99 and $1,699.99 and include a hearing test and service visits.

Medicare, insurance and tax
Medicare.gov is direct about it: “Medicare doesn't cover hearing aids or exams for fitting hearing aids.” Part B does cover diagnostic hearing exams a doctor orders, at 20% of the approved amount after the 2026 Part B deductible of $283. Some Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) offer extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn't cover. The Medicare guide has the details and worked examples. The IRS lists hearing aids, batteries and repairs as medical expenses in Publication 502, so they can be paid from an FSA or HSA.
